When I was studying medicine, I never learned about the microbiome (colonies of various microbes that reside in your gut and elsewhere in and on your body), and the importance of the gut to keep optimum health. Actually, this is a very “new discovery”; articles related to this topic started appearing in 2010 and now every day thousands of articles talking about the microbiome are published. Nowadays, you hear some medical words such as fecal transplantation…yes, you heard right, and this is becoming revolutionary to treat many diseases, mainly neurological related.

 

The microbiome influences everything, your immunity, blood sugar, hormones, metabolism, cardiovascular system, neurological system, respiratory system, glandular system, the gastrointestinal system, urogenital system, the weight, the cognitive function, the skin, your mood and behave.

 

The cells that line the gut are like a fortress. They work to keep the good things in (nutrients, vitamins and minerals) and the bad things out (chemicals, toxins, etc.). To a significant degree, our metabolic health is determined by the success of the fortress. When toxins in our gut leak out into the rest of the body, our white blood cells go to work and trigger inflammation, which is the natural enemy to a fully functioning metabolism.

 

Think of your microbiome as your internal fountain of youth. The healthier and more vibrant your core, the healthier and more vibrant you are. Think of your gut as the nucleus of health and well-being. It should be a repository of nutrition and gut bacteria to fuel our body’s needs. But thanks to the western diets, our core (also referred to as our microbiome) has become a breeding ground for metabolic breakdown. In my book I explained what are the main causes of dysbiosis (It is the medical word to refer when the microbiome loses its balance), I explained the main functions of the microbiome in our body and why it is crucial to take care of the precious organ, yes you heard right, the microbiome has been called for many the missing organ to be discovered. Also, in my book I give people many tools and steps to start taking action to bring balance to the microbiome, to start healing the leaky gut so you start healing any chronic disease from the root that is the common cause of 90% or more of the diseases that are overwhelming the world nowadays, this is inflammation, inflammation starts when the microbiome has lost its balance and diversity.
